Wikimedia Releases an Official Wikipedia Android App

Share

There have been third party Wikipedia Android apps for quite a while, but there wasn’t an official app from the Wikimedia Foundation until last week. The new Wikipedia Android app allows you to search Wikipedia and save articles for offline use. With GPS enabled on your device the Wikipedia app will help you find articles about the places and landmarks near you. Like any good app designed for reading articles on a mobile device, the Wikipedia app allows you to change the font size for easier reading.

Whether we like it or not, students often use Wikipedia when they start researching online. Just like with printed encyclopedias, I don’t let students cite Wikipedia, but I do let them use Wikipedia as a starting point. The new Wikipedia app for Android should make it easier to find and read useful content on an Android phone or Android tablet.
