Google Drive for Android Gets a Material Design Update

Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 9.20.14 AMThroughout the year Google has been pushing out updates to the Google Drive web interface. The bulk of the updates have been to create what Google calls a material design. In practice, material design seems to be about making your Drive dashboard a gallery of big icons and previews of your files rather than just a list of file names. This week Google updated the Google Drive Android app to match their material design goals.

The updated version of Google Drive for Android includes the material design concept of displaying your files as large icons containing a small preview of your files. This should make it easier to recognize and select a file. Other aspects of the update include the option to add a note to shared files and an updated PDF viewer. The updated sharing option allows you to send a note about your files when you share them via email. That option is just like the one you have when sharing files from Google Drive’s web interface. The updated PDF viewer in Google Drive for Android enables you to highlight, copy, and paste text from PDFs.
